Either way, I'm not surprised- the game's upfront about the fact that his father worked there, and that Steve and Derek are both more than a little apprehensive about hiring him at first. Or he was drunk one day and just got in an argument. Add on the fact that Pappa Scaletta owed Bruno and was having trouble making payments, it's possible that they knocked him off on orders. Just look at what we see in Mafia II, with constant violence and disregard (and even contempt) against the workers.
Work on the waterfront was a huge risk to people in those days, with constant violence if you weren't in line with what the bosses wanted. In fact, it's possible to beat the game without ever confronting them, if you've made enough money through other means!Īlso, I don't mind the fact that his dad was killed by them. They easily could've added another way for him to make a ton of money at the end of the story other than killing them (as was planned, robbing a bank) but development was hell and things got shifted around. Honestly, the fact that Vito's old man got wasted by Right Steve and Sure Derek, doesn't really impact the story that much.
